Opening a new door to Russia - A new door has opened to the Northern European market and it marks the first time in history that an Asian carrier has introduced direct, regular service to St. Petersburg, Russia. Last month, Korean Air started non-stop daily flights to Russia three times per week with flights departing from its Incheon hub. Now, SkyTeam business travelers will no longer need to book an extra business day for traveling, as the nine-hour flight from Incheon delivers passengers within the same day. St. Petersburg, a popular holiday destination, is known as one of the most historically significant cities in the world, surrounded by exquisite palaces and breathtaking architecture. With Korean Air serving SkyTeam as the channel from Asia to Northern Europe, all passengers will have a new option when making travel plans to Russia. Passengers planning a trip can also travel to Northern Europe from the west by flying with Delta Air Lines, Air France, Alitalia and CSA Czech Airlines.
European Travel Sees Growth - As reported by Eurocontrol, European traffic has grown four percent this year alone and the volume of passengers traveling to Europe this year has increased six percent over the same period last year. Regions experiencing significant growth include Germany and France, home country of SkyTeam member Air France and SkyTeam's hub Charles de Gaulle airport. In addition, SkyTeam member CSA Czech Airlines has transported over two million passengers for travel to Eastern Europe as the airline estimates their total number of passengers is up 30 percent and rising to meet the projected 4.4 million passengers for 2004. Other popular European destinations for CSA passengers are: Paris, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Madrid, Moscow, Manchester, Sofia, Brussels and Rome. In addition, a new codeshare relationship has formed between CSA Czech Airlines and Malev, which marks the closest partnership yet between two national carriers from the new EU member countries. This codeshare allows each airline to offer a wider variety of services for their passengers traveling to destinations in western and northern Europe including: Budapest; Prague; Barcelona; Birmingham, United Kingdom; Luxembourg; Manchester; Oslo; Gothenburg, Sweden; Riga, Latvia; Tallinn, Estoria; and Vilnius, Lithuania. With six airline members, including three in Europe, the SkyTeam Alliance is well equipped to take passengers to their desired European locations.
CEO Receives Top Honor - Last month Korean Air Chairman Mr. Yang Ho Cho received one of the highest civilian honors awarded by the government of France. The President of France, Jacques Chirac, awarded Mr. Cho the title of Commandeur in France's Legion D'Honneur. Mr. Cho is the second SkyTeam Chief Executive Officer to receive such a prestigious award. Mr. Jean-Cyril Spinetta of Air France has also earned the respected title. Both Mr. Cho and Mr. Spinetta were recognized for being instrumental in creating the world's most successful alliance, SkyTeam.
