Tipping

Tipping is not expected in Beijing. Until recently, tipping was actually frowned upon throughout China. Some upscale restaurants in hotels may include a 10-15% gratuity in the bill. Bellhops appreciate a tip for carrying luggage to your room.

Getting Around

Taxis

Taxis are the most convenient way to get around the city. Try to avoid traveling during rush hour. Pick up taxis only at official stands, and never accept a ride from a driver who approaches you. Always make sure you can see the meter clearly. Most drivers don't speak English, so carry the address of your destination written in Chinese. Receipts are useful in case you need to track down lost luggage.

Subway

The subway is a useful way of avoiding traffic congestion, but the cars can get overcrowded. The underground network covers the city center and radiates out to the suburbs. Buy your ticket from a kiosk in the station before you board.

Buses

If you don't speak Mandarin, avoid Beijing's buses. They cover all parts of the city, and fares are cheap. However, drivers rarely speak English, and the winding routes can be confusing.

Bicycles

Many consider bicycling the best way to get around Beijing. Most roads have designated cycle lanes, but only the most experienced riders should join the swarms of locals on bikes. Some upscale hotels rent bicycles.
