The best time to visit Beijing is autumn (late August to early November), when
temperatures are moderate and skies are clear. Spring is also a good season to
visit, although strong winds can bring clouds of sand that tint the air yellow.
Summers are hot and humid, with the average temperature in July 79°F
(26°C). Winters are bitterly cold, with temperatures often dropping below
zero. The coldest month is January, when the average temperature is 24°F
(-5°C). Summer and fall are the busiest times for tourism, which surges
around Labor Day and National Day as well as two weeks before and after Chinese New
Year. Book your hotel in advance.

Money
The currency in China is the renminbi (RMB), literally “the people's
currency.” The basic unit is the yuan (¥), which consists of ten jiao or
100 fen. Always carry a good supply of ¥10 notes, because taxi drivers and
store clerks can't always give change for large bills. All major currencies
can be exchanged easily at the airport, upscale hotels and department stores.
Hotels, restaurants and shopping malls generally accept major credit cards. ATMs are
the most convenient place to get money. Check with your bank to be sure you can
withdraw money in Beijing before you travel.
