A highlight in London's art calendar, the BP Portrait Award exhibition is held annually at the National Portrait Gallery. It showcases the winning entries of what is considered by many to be the most prestigious portrait competition in the world.

The BP Portrait Award continues to be a highly successful annual event aimed at encouraging young artists to focus upon and develop the theme of portraiture within their work.

The Award is open to everyone aged 18 and over and the first prize is £25,000. The BP Portrait Award has proved the launch pad for the careers of a number of successful portrait artists.

The 2008 winner was 35-year-old London artist Craig Wylie, with his portrait, K (oil on canvas, 2100 x 1650 mm), of his girlfriend Katherine.

The winner of the second BP Young Artist Award of £5000 (for the work of an entrant aged between 18 and 30) was Peiyuan Jiang.
