The Cenotaph in Whitehall serves as the focus for the nation's annual commemoration of those who fought and died in war. The Royal Family, as heads of the armed services, political leaders and foreign ambassadors lead the wreath-laying.

On Remembrance Sunday, the nearest Sunday to Armistice Day - the 11th day of the 11th month when, at the 11th hour, the end of the First World War was declared - crowds line Whitehall to watch the sombre ceremony and pay their respects with the two-minute silence.

The mournful solo bugle sounds the Last Post, and prayers are offered for the sacrifices made in war.
