Business Etiquette

• It is customary for men to shake hands and for women to kiss each other on the cheek when they meet. Maintaining eye contact indicates trust
• English is widely spoken when doing business. Chileans will generally not expect you to speak Spanish but will be pleasantly surprised if you do
• Chileans dress smartly for business. Suits are the norm. It is common for women to wear high heels and short skirts
• Punctuality is not of great importance. It is not unusual for participants to arrive for a meeting 15 minutes after the scheduled starting time
• Chileans often do business in restaurants over lunch or dinner. They are not big drinkers and rarely meet for drinks without food. They are good hosts and enjoy entertaining at home
• It is best to avoid scheduling business meetings during the popular vacation months of January and February
