Doing Business
Business Etiquette
- Address business associates using their surname followed by “san” (for example,
“Tanaka-san” or “Suzuki-san”). Given names are rarely used in the business
environment. They are more appropriate among family and close friends
- It is becoming more common in Japan to greet foreign associates with a
handshake. However, if your colleague greets you with a bow, respond by doing
the same. The deeper the bow, the greater the respect shown
- Punctuality is important. Always arrive for appointments on time – not
too early or too late
- Carry plenty of business cards. If an associate offers you a business card and
you don't return the favor, you may seem uninterested in doing business
with that particular person. Always give and receive cards with two hands, and
take a moment to look at cards before putting them away
- It is useful if your card has a Japanese translation on the reverse side
- Note that the Japanese word for “yes” (“hai”) is often used to express “I
understand,” not as a promise to do something
- In meetings, make sure you seem alert at all times. Don't slouch or
cross your legs, which could be perceived as signs that you are too relaxed
