With their mild, dry weather, April (cherry blossom time) and October-November (when
the fall colors appear) are the best months for visiting Tokyo. Winters are
relatively mild. January is the coldest month, with temperatures averaging
41.5°F (5.3°C) and occasionally dipping below zero. Summers are
hot and humid. If traveling in August, when temperatures average 81°F
(27°C), book an air-conditioned hotel room. Pack an umbrella in June, the
rainiest month. Note that Tokyo is particularly quiet during the popular vacation
times around New Year's, in mid-August and during Golden Week (a string of
public holidays in late April and early May).

The unit of currency in Japan is the Japanese yen (¥). Exchange centers in
Narita Airport change some 20 international currencies. Banks and large post offices
throughout Tokyo exchange US dollars and other major currencies. ATMs are the most
convenient place to get money. Check with your bank to be sure you can withdraw
money in Tokyo before you travel.
