Climate

With their mild, dry weather, April (cherry blossom time) and October-November (when the fall colors appear) are the best months for visiting Tokyo. Winters are relatively mild. January is the coldest month, with temperatures averaging 41.5°F (5.3°C) and occasionally dipping below zero. Summers are hot and humid. If traveling in August, when temperatures average 81°F (27°C), book an air-conditioned hotel room. Pack an umbrella in June, the rainiest month. Note that Tokyo is particularly quiet during the popular vacation times around New Year's, in mid-August and during Golden Week (a string of public holidays in late April and early May).

Voltage

100V AC, 50 Hz two flat-pin plugs are standard.

Money

The unit of currency in Japan is the Japanese yen (¥). Exchange centers in Narita Airport change some 20 international currencies. Banks and large post offices throughout Tokyo exchange US dollars and other major currencies. ATMs are the most convenient place to get money. Check with your bank to be sure you can withdraw money in Tokyo before you travel.
