Business Etiquette
- Formal dress is the norm for business meetings. Women should dress
conservatively and wear skirts rather than pants
- Men should not remove their jackets during negotiations
- Making the effort to speak a few words in Russian is seen as a gesture of good faith
- Be on time for meetings. If your Russian counterpart arrives late, do not react
negatively. Patience is a virtue in Russia, but punctuality is not
- It is customary to begin and end a meeting with a brief handshake
- It can be very difficult to achieve anything without help from a local, so seek out knowledgeable local contacts
- Business cards should be printed with English on one side and Russian on the
other. Exchange business cards at the start or end of a meeting
- An open and direct business style is the norm
- Deals should be followed up and confirmed in writing as quickly as possible
- Be alert if your business associates are making toasts. This is an important
tradition, and failure to join in is considered rude
- If invited to someone's house, it is customary to bring flowers or another gift
